Project overview

This award-winning Coquitlam renovation transformed the kitchen and adjoining living spaces around an extraordinary view. Major structural changes opened the previously divided floor plan and made way for an expansive kitchen, a 16-foot span of windows and a large central island designed for cooking, entertaining and gathering. Custom millwork throughout the kitchen, family room, workspace and laundry brought function and continuity to the newly connected spaces.

Renovation details

Creating a more open main floor required significant structural work, including the removal of two load-bearing walls and the relocation of mechanical systems. Along the exterior kitchen wall, a new structural beam allowed for a dramatic 16-foot span of windows, bringing natural light into the space and making the surrounding Coquitlam views a defining part of the renovation.

At the centre of the new kitchen is an oversized island that combines generous prep and gathering space with extensive storage and a Kohler trough sink with on-demand hot water. The kitchen was equipped for serious cooking and entertaining with a 48-inch six-burner Monogram range, built-in French-door refrigerator, multiple dishwashers and specialized cabinetry for spices, utensils, recycling and pantry storage. White Shaker cabinetry and Caesarstone perimeter counters are contrasted by the movement and character of the polished Brown Fantasy granite island.

The renovation continued into the family room with a new linear fireplace, chevron tile surround, custom millwork and an integrated home office. A redesigned laundry and mudroom added walnut cabinetry, a utility sink, drying area, shoe storage and a dedicated space for the homeowners’ dogs—extending the same attention to function throughout the main floor.
