What better way to spend your retirement years than to spend it close to your family? That is just what this client wanted when she decided to move into her daughter’s basement suite! Moving from a large house with lots of rooms and downsizing into a more compact space required some forethought and planning to really maximize the square footage.
A full renovation of the entire layout of the basement was in order! The plan was to create an open concept that allowed more light and full sightlines into the backyard. Reconfiguring some unused and unnecessary areas and making some strategic decisions about how to use the space really helped to create a place that felt like home!
The open concept floorplan was created by removing a bearing wall, installing a 20’ steel beam and reinforcing the footings. The kitchen is now bright and airy and boasts Silestone counters and Pentco cabinets. The appliances are energy efficient as well as being sleek and modern.
With the removal of one unused bedroom and the reduction in the size of the storage area, we were able to relocate the laundry to the newly created powder room. A large barn door beautifully hides the laundry room when entertaining and allows the lady of the house to have her own master suite.
The master suite was elegantly updated by converting the existing tub into a walk-in shower complete with shower bench and rainfall showerhead. There is plenty of space on the Caesarstone counter which mirrors the stone in the shower. The whole retreat is complete with stained rift cut white oak cabinetry, designer wallpaper and heated floors.
All the windows were replaced, and French doors were incorporated off the living area. A new fireplace insert was added making this new home warm and cozy. Finally, full sound proofing was added which also has the benefit of a superior fireproofing. The future of this retirement looks bright and with having the grandchildren so close, who could ask for more?
